Year 2011 has been high fueled book year, although only one of the books is available in stores as we speak ("Kuvaa asenteella").

In January 2012 the Panorama book will see the light of day (" Näyttävä Panoraamakuvaus").

Panorama book was made with the panorama expert Rami Saarikorpi. Both amateurs and experts can enjoy that title. We have pretty much everything there from shooting panoramas with sweep technology, mobile phones, lomography film cameras to regular old school panoramas, 360, 360 pole, 3D panoramas, HDR- panoramas, 360 HDR-panoramas and Gigapans. And of course some really beautiful images.

March 2012 my pride and joy the festival photography book ("Kamoon!") is up for release, which I made with Petri Vilén. Although this book has all the knowledge you need to know about shooting rock, it´s mostly a photo book. So if you don´t understand word of finnish you really can enjoy that title. About 60-70% of the material is new or unreleased.

The book has a few pictures from these talented artist too:

Kalle Björklid, Jana Blomqvist, Jussi Eerola, Henri Käck, Aku-Axel Muukka, Mikko Pylkkö and Saku Tiainen. We also interviewed promoter Petri Bakker, stage light guru Mikki Kunttu, pyrotechnician Markku Aalto, photographer Kalle Björklid and the finnish death metal band Sotajumala, a band that me and Petri have a huge respect for, as they kick ass on stage are a great band to photograph too.

After these titles you can expect a book about the circle of life and how to photograph your life. I´m doing it with Mikko Pylkkö. This book is mainly targeted for amateurs and for those who want to improve their skills documenting those everyday special moments and those big days of our lives. This book is targeted for early 2013 release. Above images are for that book by the way.

I´have also started on a book that has a all new approach to your basic beginners book to digital photography. It´s going to be very expressive and visual. There are some shreds of the ideology in the "Kuvaa asenteella" book, but the idea is much more dynamic and targeted to adults. This is longer project, so don´t hold your breath. As a longer project there is also a artsy band book taking it´s shape and form.

2012 will hopefully see my work as a part of a larger exhibition. Time, form and place to be announced later.

Panorama book is finally done. The book will be available early 2012 and is titled "Näyttävä Panoraamakuvaus" This project has had more twist and turns than your average action movie. The thank you stands luckily in the end. I want to thank Rami Saarikorpi for a great effort during this project.

Im really anxious to show you our work.

I want to thank for the great support and interest we´ve got from our colleagues towards this project. At this point I can say for certain that there will be additional photographers in this project to help us make a better book. The very talented persons will be revealed later.

After those two titles I will be continuing my work around a book about our life from birth to death. The idea revolves around the circle of life we each experience and how to photograph those important moments. The young and very promising talent Mikko Pylkkö will be working on this title with me.

Insomnium has a new album coming up soon and I did some promo work for them recently. I was really happy about this opportunity to as "no name photographer" to work with them. So thanks for choosing me.

Due to individual schedule reasons we had the shoot in club Kerubi in Joensuu during Ilosaarirock. Although a very nice music venue maybe not the most ideal place to shoot promos for a melodic death metal band. When I first got the offer for the shoot I was already thinking about using textures on this shot. During spring I looked for a set of textures to use. This one has old metal plate and broken car window used to make more dynamic appeal to the photo.

Lights as always Nikon strobes controlled with SU-800 controller. One strobe with a softbox in the front, two strobes in the side and one for the background.

Riihimakirock 2011

Here is a portrait from a session I shot for a hair contest. This shot didn´t make the cut, and we used different approach and editing in the end for the contest. This was my personal favorite as a picture and as editing was concerned.

The lesson in this one is to listen to your client. You´re doing work for the client and making their visions true. It helps you to get the next assignment. Hair and make up by Milla Joska from Studio Helmi. Model Mari Pääkkönen.

Gear: 2x SB-800, 2X SB-900, 1X-SD-9 for the biggest softbox. Two Lastolite Eazyboxes, and one Honl Grid. Controlled with SU-800. Background is basic wallpaper with added textures from a colorful rock.

Music photography book in spring 2012

It is my pleasure to announce that I´m continuing to work with Docendo Publishing in the future on several new book projects.

The first new title to be announced is a book about festival/music photography! Yes a music photography book, finally!

I started working on this title last summer and will be continuing to work on it this upcoming summer. I´m happy to announce that the very talented Petri Vilén is working on the book with me. Those of you don´t know him yet check out his work here and like his facebook fan page here.

The book should be out in the spring of 2012. Further details and the possible other contributing guest photographers of the book to be announced later.

At this point I want to thank Juha Virkki, Matti Karhula, Juha Janhonen and the good folks at Docendo making my dream come true.

Last but not least, here´s some release dates for my other titles.

Pregnancy and Baby Pictures

Originally this post was supposed to be about me getting back to the music photography scene at Finnish Metal Expo. Life decided otherwise and my little boy surfaced on that particular weekend. So instead of rock photos I give you a baby and pregnancy shot.

Those of you waiting for new live shots from concerts have to wait until the summer festival season begins. So please hang in there, they´re coming!

Those who are interested in the upcoming panorama book should know that Rami Saarikorpi is giving lectures about panorama photography on April 2.-3. at Kuva & Kamera Expo. So please check it out. You can find me at the expo too if you have something to ask about my work, books and etc.

Photograph with Attitude!-book

As I revealed earlier that I was working on a panorama book. The other educational book is finally ready to be revealed. It´s a photography book aimed to younger upcoming photographers and of course to older photographers looking for new ways to develope their skills.

The finnish title of the book is: Kuvaa asenteella! – vauhtia ja fiilistä (Photograph with attitude). The book aims to bring inspiration, theory, tips and tricks to several genres of photography that hasn´t really got room in traditional educational photography books (music, mobile phone, travel, party and skiing photography). Theory of photography and the ever popular landscape photography hasn´t been left out either. Portrait photography is there too but with a strong emphasis on strobism.

At this point I´m extremely happy how things have been rolling along and we should see the book in the stores in the fall 2011. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I´ve had several photographers to contribute material to the book to make it more diverse. The real beneficiary is the reader as these photographers bring material and aspects that otherwise would have been left out of the book. Thank you is in order also to other people that have helped me in other ways making this book possible.

Working around the group shot dilemma

The term group shot is something that makes photographers usually sweat or run away.

It´s already challenging enough to get a good and flattering expression with good lighting on one person not to mention on multiple persons in just one shot. To make thing a bit more difficult the backdrop should be the same to all the persons in the picture.

I´ve opted in some occasion to shoot each person individually on a backdrop that is easy enough to widen and continue in Photoshop. This way I get the lighting I want on each subject and good facial expression to all of them.

The example picture was first made with three persons individually added to the photo. Six months later the company had grown with two more persons and needed more photos. It was easy enough to expand the group shot from three person to a five person shot without having each person in the studio once again.

Maybe not the perfect solution but something to try once in a while.

Year of Photography with Hipstamatic

A year has passed since I discovered the wonderful world of Hipstamatic. It changed my attitude towards mobile phone photography. With this wonderful app the rather useless camera was an instant fun machine available to produce seriously flawed pictures but still somehow just right and perfect. Here´s 12 pictures to salute the whole year of fun this app has provided me.

Pelle Miljoona Promo Shoot

This years first promo shoot was with the finnish punk legend Pelle Miljoona. It was a huge honour to work with this living legend. The man himself was an absolute pleasure to work with.

Pelle has a new record coming this spring which includes remakes of his old classic with an orchestra, so do check it out. Also don´t miss the very special event where Pelle Miljoona Oy plays the legendary Moottoritie on kuuma album with Sami Yaffa and Andy McCoy.

Year of Confusion

My year 2010 has been very interesting and confusing to say the least. Making photography books has been a dream since the day one I started photography. The whole year has been revolving around that dream. Some projects have had nasty crash and burns and some just didn´t go anywhere. On the other hand some projects have just pretty much fallen out of nowhere to me. The year 2011 is set to be very similiar to 2010.

My advice to those, who have the same dream as I do, is to be active and open minded but at the same time a bit pessimistic. Don´t go "all in" on projects that aren´t certain. Have back-up plans and be open to other propositions and projects. I hope that your dreams come true and that you don´t give up.

I've been overwhelmed by the help I´ve had in my projects from my fellow photographers. So a collective thank you is in order! And of course thanks to Matti Karhula from Docendo for having enormous faith in me.

And to everyone else I wish you all the best in year 2011!

Upcoming Panorama book

This fall has been extremely busy time for me. I have been busy at work for my upcoming books and negotiating on some other cool projects. The downfall is that I haven´t been photographing that much. The first one of my upcoming educational books is a book about Panoramas. I´m co-writing it with Simo Peteri and Rami Saarikorpi. Thanks to Simo for having me around for the ride.

The themes and the name of my other Docendo book is not ready to be published, but I´m extremely happy to have some really cool photographers writing point of views for my book and contributing material.

More about that later.

Darkness Our Playground Promo Shoot

More promotional work to display. This time it was time do work with a metal band called Darkness Our Playground. DOP is preparing to record their first demo in the near future. For the shoot Anna (vocals) had booked for us the fabulous Pikkupalatsi in the centre of Tampere. Big thanks to the wonderful staff and owner of the place for having us. Mona promo shoot

I like to plan my shoots carefully and have a basic blueprint for the day. But sometimes things just don´t go your way. Promo shoot of a great new upcoming pop band Mona was one of these gigs. First we had to cancel the first date because of mix up with individual schedules. The second date was ruined by rain, ok fair enough that happens.

For the third date we booked a great indoor culture factory for the shoot. Now nothing can go wrong. Wrong! Nobody happened to mention to us that the place was under complete renovation.

Not a great start for the day. Luckily the band was really great bunch of people to work with and we did the shoot where we could wondering around the city for places to shoot.

I guess the lesson learned in this story is that be prepared for anything and have open mind to change your plans.

Mobile phone photography and Articles in Kameralehti

My articles about photography studies and music photography are in the upcoming issue of Kamera-lehti (Finnish camera magazine). Issue 3-4.

I´ve have been seriously addicted to mobile phone photography recently(thanks to Simo Peteri). There´s a lot of cool applications like panorama stitchers, lomography filters and etc available for mobile phones. The picture quality isn´t that amazing but you can have a killer time playing around with these applications where ever you go.

Some of my favorite applications at the moment are Hipstamatic, Photoshop Mobile, Autostitch and TiltShiftGen. Try them out.

Lie In Ruins promotional shoot and Season of Sounds

I also ended up making promos for Lie In Ruins. Lie In Ruins released a new record recently titled as "Swallowed By The Void". Great old school death metal record, check them out here.

The guys had a quite clear vision what they wanted from the photos. Basically they wanted a bit demonic and ghostly group potraits in a old factory location.

It´s always nice when the customer has a strong vision for the pictures, but at the same time it´s challenging to match the expectations of the customers he/she has in his/her head. Not to make things easier the bands singer is an able photographer himself.

Nature threw us a curve ball and we ended up photographing in a piles of snow. Try to move and adjust your lights when you´re covered in snow.....

For the photos I used two to three speedlights and controlled them with a IR-controller. As the weather was what it was I ended up doing the "ghostly" effects in postprocessing. Original idea was to combine slow shutter speeds and rear-sync flash.

All in all a fun and a educational experience. Thanks for the fantastic guys of Lie In Ruins.

Rise Against & Juliette Lewis

Juliette Lewis and Rise Against had concerts this week in Helsinki and I photographed them both. Juliettes show had probably the best stage lights in a small club since Hanoi Rocks farewell shows in club Tavastia. A review of Rise Against show can be found at www.festarit.org. Tip of the day: Always print those emails where it says you got a permit to shoot the gig, you´re name may not be in the list always. This scenario has happened to me more than once.

A year in rock photography (tech and permits)

The third and last part of the "A year in rock photography theme" is about photography permits and tech.

One of the most frequent questions I´ve had from my fellow photographers is about what kind of settings I use for my pictures. I use Nikon´s excellent auto iso function were I can choose the iso range, usually at 200-6400 and the critical shutter speed at 1/200 in aperture mode. Aperture is between f2-5.6 depending on the amount of light available. Continous autofocus and focus points usually set at 11 points. Measuring of light is usually done by point metering as D700 and D3 cameras allow light metering from each individual focus point. Exposure compensation is between -1.5-+1.5. Slow flash sync technique is something I am trying to master this fall or in the spring of 2010. For slow sync tech on music photography one should check out Samu Hintsas pictures.

People have also asked me about permits and how easy they are to get. There´s no obvious clear answer but I´ve been quite lucky with them. Surprisingly I´ve had the most trouble with Finnish bands (domestic market bands) that are on a multinational labels. Foreign larger or indie bands have been very flexible. But there´s no clear rule to be made as it depends on so many things. If there is a band you´re interested in photographing send them an email, it doesn´t cost a dime to try.

A year in rock photography

Music and photography have been the two biggest passions in my life.

The idea to combine rock and photography was there since the beginning of 2006. The works of the more well know Finnish rock photographers (K. Björklid, V.A. Juurikkala and Tina K.) fed my hunger to finally try out rock photography. In the fall of 2008 British underground legend The Wildhearts announced a gig in Tampere, which I ended up photographing.

My first rockshoot wasn´t a disaster but not so glorious either. What surprised me was the amount of sweat one needs to shed and the amount of push and shove one has to stand for the photos in a club concert.

So the illusion of to "just take photos" was quickly broken. Photographing music can be one of the hardest things in the art of photography. The knowledge of your gear, measuring and evaluating light, focusing and tracking your subject and image post processing skills has to be in a good level. And to add to the list, you may only have two or three songs to take those expressive shots. So saying music photography isn´t real photography or there´s no skill required as everything is handed out to photographer is a serious understatement!

My second outing at rock photography came again in the form of The Wildhearts since somehow the band’s mastermind had liked my photos. The second outing proved out to be a more balanced set photographywise. Wildhearts shoot was followed by D.A.D. and the highlight of the year Hanoi Rocks farewell shows. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to the most important band in my life, and the photos turned out to be quite good, probably my finest work up to date.

People behind D.A.D bookings suggested that why not try out festival photography at Kivenlahtirock? I approached people behind the festival and got a permit for the event. The first outing at festival photography didn´t really impress me, it was ok but nothing more.Shooting at clubs maybe more challenging but it can be a lot more expressive in my opinion.

I was going to leave the festival photography to rest after Myotatuulirock in which I had agreed to be the official photographer of the event. After the MTR festival I started to get into festival photography and applied to more festivals and got the permit to most of them.

The summer proved out to be a rather hectic balancing between my normal photographic duties and rock photography.

As the fall is here once again I’m back in shooting clubs and have some really nice gigs coming up that I’m looking forward to. The challenges for the next year is to produce photos of even better quality (more expressive and better post processing), and to get my hands on more promotional shoots for bands and a better platform or media to exhibit my work. I also hope to do a some kind of exhibition of my photos in 2010 or 2011.

I’m also planning a fun theme project, but more on that later :)

As this is a some sort of retrospective of the first year in rock photography there´s some photos in the previous post from the very first shoot up to the most recent as a some sort of journey.

Last but not least, thanks to the wonderful supportive people for the fabulous feedback and to the photographers I´ve had the privilege to meet this year.
